If you’re ready to stop stomping around the freelance content mills sites and pitching your services for lower and lower pay, check out these resources to find new freelance work for April, May, and beyond.
1. Work Your Network
Let your friends, family, and LinkedIn connections know you’re available for freelance writing—many businesses need content and don’t realize you do that. Yes, you can do it in a way that doesn’t sound desperate with something like: “I just wrapped up a big project and have some availability for a new freelance writing client or two at the end of April. Get in touch!”
2. Review Awards
I was a judge for ASBPE (American Society of Business Publication Editors) awards recently, and previously a Women in Content Marketing Awards judge (and 2023 nominee!). These lists provided fresh idea of publications and agencies I never heard of to approach for work.
3. Follow Editors on Social
Many editors post freelance writing needs on X (Twitter), as well as BlueSky, and LinkedIn, so follow the ones in your target market—and keep an eye out for pitch calls.
4. Post Relevant Content Online
Share content in your niche on LinkedIn or Instagram to attract editors and brands looking for freelance writers like you. Consider using hashtags that could get you to pop up to the right clients. #b2b #pettech #femtech are some I use and scan.
5. Research Associations
I recently started writing for a few membership associations through an agency to help them drive sales and engagement. There are more associations out there than you can even dream of on your own.
6. Write for Your Favorite Apps
Apps need content! I’m working with LoseIt, previously wrote for Headspace, Nike Training Club, Fitbit, and MyFitnessPal. Think of brands you already use—many have blogs or user education content you could be writing.
