Some days, I take a lazy genius approach to marketing.
I literally look around me for brands and companies that might be a good fit for me to write for and start my research.
Recent examples:
Apps on my phone. I downloaded Zenplanner to keep track of my kids’ activities calendar at their local gym. This prompted me to see if the company has a blog. It does. Then I look them up on LinkedIn and other brands similar to them and file them in a Note on my phone or in my Notion CRM as potential clients.
I look at the products surrounding me. This is one of my favorite content marketing exercises to do when I’m bored and don’t feel like looking for freelance jobs online. I name brands within about a 10’ radius around me to look them up and see if they have a blog. I’ll also search on LinkedIn in case I know someone there. I already know the products and use them so I’m a fantastic writer option for them (IMO).
I scan my inbox. I look in the promotional folders at brands I probably use and/or signed up for to get their newsletters. I see if any of these brands could be a fit for me to approach. I’ll also look in the folder I designated “potential freelance clients” that I drag some into throughout the year for future research.
I look to competitors. I explore whether any of the brands I previously worked with have competitors that I could approach. As long as I’m not still working with them and didn’t sign away my rights to approach competition; I’m golden.
I scan my Google alerts. I recently set up more detailed Google alert phrases for my industry so I’d be notified of new partnerships and acquisitions in my niche. Let Google do the work for you to deliver potential freelance clients to your inbox.
Did you find these helpful?
Will you try any?
If so, I’d love to hear from you.
Thanks for being a reader.
