One of the most important things I’ve done in my business is to diversify the types of freelance writing I do.
When I first started freelance writing as a side hustle in 2006, I thought I was writing and editing editorial articles by day for Weight Watchers (although in reality, it was content marketing or brand content).
In the evenings and early mornings, I did any freelance work I could find online.
Some of it was writing press releases, other times it was e-commerce writing for a DTC website, occasionally it was B2B writing for a travel trade publication, and eventually some ad copywriting, sponsored content writing, and newsletters for brands and editorial websites.
I didn’t know it then but I was building up a freelance portfolio that would set me up for running a freelance writing business.
As editorial magazine budgets continue to shrink, I’ve found that a significant portion of my business comes from working with brand clients, writing content marketing articles, and doing copywriting for various brands.
You’ll hear many people say to specialize and niche down (I’ve mentioned previously how having a few niches can prove to be fruitful), but it can be helpful in this current climate to learn another type of freelance writing.
Some writers are having a lot of success with ghostwriting, others are honing copywriting skills for clients, while others are looking for great content marketing clients to pad their bank accounts.
If you’re curious about how to find brand clients to work with, this new mini course🧨 can show you fresh, fun ways to find potential freelance clients without using fiverr or upwork. (You can click through the slide and get ideas and exercises or listen to the audio presentation when you have 25 minutes.)
I hope this article on the different types of freelance writing inspires you to find freelance writing jobs in new places and get motivated to improve writing skills, continue to learn, and add new clients to your books.
