Many of us love the idea of setting goals, but the execution? That’s where things tend to fall apart.

It’s easy to say, “I want to make more money” or “I want better clients,” but what does that actually look like in your business?

If you’re serious about growing in Q2 (I know I am!) you need clear, action-oriented goals. Here’s how to set them—and more importantly, how to follow through.

Be As Specific AF

One of the biggest mistakes freelancers make is setting vague, uninspiring goals. “Make more money” isn’t a real goal. “Increase my income by $2,000 a month by landing two new clients” is.

  • Where do you want your business to be by the end of Q2?

  • What type of clients do you want to work with?

  • How do you want to structure your workload? More retainer clients? Higher-paying one-off projects?

Without a clear vision, you’ll spend the next three months reacting instead of growing. Be specific about what success looks like for you, then work backward to create a freelance marketing plan.

(Diana’s Q2 Goal? Find another one to two anchor clients to bring in another $2,000 worth of ongoing work per month. How to do that? Send 80 to 100 emails/month and follow up consistently.)

Build a More Stable Client Base

A major turning point in my business was landing an anchor client—one that provided steady, well-paying work each month.

  • If you’re constantly chasing small, one-off projects, look for ways to shift toward long-term client relationships.

  • If you already have an anchor client, don’t assume they’ll always be there. Continue networking, marketing, and diversifying your income streams so you’re not dependent on a single source of income.

  • A strong client pipeline gives you the power to say no to low-paying projects that aren’t worth your time.

Learn New Skills That Increase Your Value

Freelancers who grow their income consistently aren’t just working more—they’re working smarter by expanding their skills and charging more for higher-value services.

  • Some of the most in-demand freelance skills in 2025 include ghostwriting, UX writing, and AI content editing. You can be a seasoned freelancer and add new skills each quarter — it’s a great goal.

  • If you’ve been offering the same services for years without raising your rates, it’s time to upskill. Even free resources—like podcasts, webinars, or YouTube tutorials—can help you position yourself for higher-paying work.

  • Look at your industry and identify one skill that could open up new opportunities.

What will your Q2 (March-June) goal be?

Share it with me in a reply email and I’ll follow up with you by July to see how it went.

Thanks for being a reader.
