Having trouble finding freelance clients?

And the top freelance or creative jobs I found this week

If you’re in the States, Happy Independence Day week! 🎇

If you’re having trouble finding freelance clients…

I’m going to show you how to look for them where other freelancers aren’t looking.

Some days, I take what I call the lazy genius approach to marketing. (Borrowed from Kendra Adachi’s podcast/brand.)

I skip the job boards.

I bypass the LinkedIn cold pitch DM to a rando in my niche.

And I start scanning the physical and digital spaces around me.

Here’s what that looks like:

✅ Apps on my phone

I downloaded Zenplanner to manage my kids’ ninja warrior class schedule, and later in the year, Gamechanger for Tball.

Then I thought, “Cool product. Does this brand have a blog?”

They do.

I checked their site, stalked them on LinkedIn, and reached out with one of my cold email templates.

✅ Products within 10 feet of me

I literally scan the room.

If it’s a product I use and love, chances are I’d be a great fit to write for them.

I look them up, then check if I know someone at the company.

This is an excellent way to find freelance content marketing clients.
(Psst: It’s one of the skills I teach in Get Paid to Write, my bestselling online course.)

✅ My inbox (yes, the promo folder too)

I’ve reviewing brands I’ve subscribed to.

The newsletters I skim.

The subject lines that caught my eye.

They’re all breadcrumbs.

If they send emails, there’s probably a content team behind them.

They might need more writing help or have other content needs where I can fill in the gaps.

✅ Past clients → Their competitors

If I’m not under contract anymore and there’s no exclusivity clause?

I look at competitors in the same niche.

They often have similar content needs.

I already know their ideal audience.

This is a great freelance job finding task if a client’s freelance funds have dried up or your manager left.

✅ I set up very specific Google Alerts.

I set up Google Alerts for key terms in my niche.

Now I get news about partnerships, new launches, and acquisitions sent right to my inbox.

It helps me stay on top of industry news and trends and gives me a reason to reach out to previous clients or find new ones that just got funding.

This is my go-to list when I don’t feel like following a traditional marketing plan.
