“Can I Pivot Niches Without Starting All Over Again?”

This is a question I get from some freelance coaching clients when they feel that their current freelance niche is oversaturated, not paying well or, they’re bored of the topic.

If you’ve ever thought about switching niches in your freelance career, you’ve probably worried: “Do I have to start back at square one?”

Here’s the good news: absolutely not. Use your previous articles to build up the new niche. Chances are, you already have one or two secret niches hiding within your published clips.

Some possible ways to pivot?

You’re a health writer with a few samples that have personal finance elements.

You’re a lifestyle writer who covers skincare, skin health and dermatology topics.

You’re a gaming writer with a few samples that address eSports and want to move into that space.

Here are three steps to help you start pivoting niches.

1. Audit your existing portfolio.
Look for similarities and styles that could help build out a new niche.

2. Rewrite your pitch language.
Say that you’re the niche writer. I’m a personal finance writer. I’m an eSports writer. I’m a skincare writer.

3. Create a new sample.
If you don’t have a clip in your new niche or you don’t love the ones you have, write one or two. Publish it on LinkedIn, Medium, or your own site. It doesn’t need to be a bylined client piece to prove you can handle the topic. You want to show editors and marketing managers that you can write and in the style of their brand.

Many freelancers I know have niched down, taken on new, unexpected niches because they paid better, or ditched old niches because they were sick of the topics and would rather start over than write one more feature on that old topic.

Itching to move into a new niche? Start reframing what you’ve already got, do some research into niches that have money, and get to work repackaging your existing clips.
