After 20+ years of freelancing, here’s what I’ve learned about getting clients to notice you and hire you:

  1. Create a professional online presence: Whether it’s a website, LinkedIn profile, or a content platform portfolio—make sure potential clients see your best work when they Google you. Don’t have published clips yet? No worries. Share personal projects that show off your skills.

  2. Pick your niche (but don’t stress about it): You don’t have to be super niche right away. Start with what you know. Do you have experience in a particular field? Leverage that to stand out. Not everything you write will be thrilling, but having a niche makes marketing yourself easier.

  3. Explore different types of freelance writing. Smart freelancers know they need to do three things to be very successful in this industry

    1. ✅ Become a very experienced niche writer in a specialty industry that pays well. (SaaS comes to mind.) Or, they need to learn different types of writing.

    2. ✅Learn different types of freelance writing. Being able to offer your high-paying clients services like newsletter copywriting, ad copywriting, turning blog posts into LinkedIn articles, writing white papers, or creating content calendars will help you stay flush with work.

    3. ✅ Always be a reader. Consume all good writing you can, and note what isn’t working with bad content. Read the content you want to write, but also read fiction, nonfiction, newspaper articles, white papers, blog posts, LinkedIn posts, magazine copywriting, product copywriting, and everything in between.
