I take these two steps within one day of receiving a freelance article assignment from a client.

✅ 1. Review the assignment

✅ 2. Start research

Why it works:

I look through the provided outline or assignment description to ensure I have all the details and materials needed to start the assignment.

(Sometimes editors forget to give me permission to an internal doc or share something I need to get started!)

Once this step is complete, I'm able to determine if I need to do online research first for background knowledge and then set up interviews or, if I can start contacting individuals or organizations to lend their expertise.

Sometimes I can gauge the level of research and approximate the amount of time this piece will take based on the outline provided and past experiences.

Kickstarting the research right away—and lining up interviews quickly helps me make more money.

How?

When another editor or marketing manager reaches out with an assignment during that timeframe, I know if I have the bandwidth to take it on.

If I'm in a good place with the first assignment, I usually say yes to the new one.

Hence, more money 💰

This is how I run an efficient freelance writing business and make the most of my part-time working hours.
