If you’re having trouble finding freelance clients…

I’m going to show you how to look for them where other freelancers aren’t looking.

Some days, I take what I call the lazy genius approach to marketing. (Borrowed from podcaster, author Kendra Adachi’s podcast/brand.)

I skip the job boards.✌️

I bypass the LinkedIn cold pitch DM.

And I just…start looking around me.

Here are some examples of what that looks like:

✅ Apps on my phone

I downloaded Zenplanner to manage my kids’ ninja warrior class schedule.

Then I thought, “Cool product. Does this brand have a blog?”

They do.

I checked their site, stalked them on LinkedIn, and reached out.

✅ Products within 10 feet of me

I literally scan the room.

If it’s a product I use and love, chances are I’d be a great fit to write for them.

Beauty brand? Check.

Pet product? Double check.

I look them up, then investigate to see if I know someone at the company.

This is an excellent way to find freelance content marketing clients.

My inbox (yes, the promo folder too)

I’ve been reviewing brands I’ve subscribed to.

The newsletters I skim.

The subject lines that caught my eye.

They’re all breadcrumbs.

If they send emails, there’s probably a content team behind them.

They might need more writing help or have other content or copywriting needs where I can fill in the gaps.

✅ I set up very specific Google Alerts.

I set up Google Alerts for key terms in my niche.

Now I get news about partnerships, new launches, and acquisitions sent right to my inbox.

It helps me stay on top of industry news and trends and gives me a reason to reach out to previous clients or find new ones that just got funding.

This is a glimpse into my go-to list when I feel like I need to shake up my traditional marketing plan.
