I don’t know about you, but sometimes freelancing feels like throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks.
Fou send pitches, apply to jobs, follow up with editors—and you keep refreshing your inbox because you’re sure the internet must be out.
That’s exactly how I was feeling mid-year. So, in July, I set what I thought was a realistic goal: land two new freelance clients by the end of August.
What actually happened?
I ended up with eight new clients.
Before you roll your eyes (because I’ve been there when nothing is landing), let me say this—some of these were small assignments, one-off projects, or brands testing content for a launch. Not all of them were dream gigs or long-term work.
So, I set another conservative goal: two new, high-paying, long-term clients by the end of the year.
Did I hit it? Kind of. I landed eight (again), but it came from a mix of persistence, follow-ups, and a little luck. And trust me, the rates were all over the map.
