Some of your dream clients? They might be content marketing outlets.
If you’ve ever wanted to write for an in-flight magazine, Costco’s magazine, AARP The magazine, or Weight Watchers, you’ve considered writing for content marketing clients.
Fancy yourself an editorial freelance writer who only writes for journalism/editorial magazine outlets through and through? Congratulations. That used to be me, too, until I became a full-time freelancer who needed to sustain her lifestyle and couldn’t write article after article that required three interviews, 1,500 words of copy and paid about $200 USD.
My hands would fall off before I got to my goal of six-figure freelancing.
They say that you when you invest, you need to diversify for long-term success.
The same is true when it comes to becoming a full-time freelancer.
You’ll want to work with several clients and you’ll likely notice that the types of writing you do vary. It could be a mix of reported editorial writing, copywriting, e-commerce writing, newsletter writing, ghostwriting for executives, or grantwriting.
There are a lot of types of freelance writing out there and I think you’ll need to mix it up to make it last in this industry.
Content marketing clients made up 64% of my salary in 2024 and they’re holding strong in 2025.
Here are a few ways to find these clients and add them to your roster.
✅ Start with your LinkedIn profile.
Clean up your profile, post something weekly, and reach out to content managers with one of these LinkedIn messages. A DM that compliments their recent campaign or article is a great way to start a convo.
✅ Specialize.
You’ll get hired faster (and paid more) when you’re the go-to person in a profitable niche. Whether that’s sleep, femtech, parenting, or SaaS, pick a lane and become known in it.
✅ Show your work.
Editors and marketers want proof. Build a writing portfolio that says: “I can do this for your brand, too.” No content marketing clips yet? Create them.
✅ Follow up.
Most clients don’t respond to your first pitch. Or even your second. Ahem, it’s usually two to three polite follow-ups later when I usually land the gig.
✅ Grow your visibility.
Post your thoughts on LinkedIn with the right posts, publish a short blog, share tips on social. You’ll start getting on the radar of people who are already hiring.
When writers say they’re stuck with low-paying assignments, I often find it’s because they’re not pitching enough content marketing clients.
But once you do?
You can use that steady paycheck to make room in your schedule for other types of freelance writing you love so you can still check that ‘fulfillment’ box of your freelance career.
